Staying Hydrated in Gymnastics

Whenever you take part in high intensity sports such as gymnastics for kids, your body expels a lot of water from your system – through sweating, in an attempt to cool your body down. This causes you to feel thirsty—your body’s way of telling you that you should replace these fluids immediately. When too much water is being expelled from your system, dehydration occurs.

Dehydration is an indication that your body doesn’t have enough fluids to keep it working properly. Without enough water in your system, your body will lose its ability to cool your body down. It will cause your body to overheat when you keep on doing your activity without drinking. Aside from that, not getting enough water decreases a gymnast’s athletic performance.

Signs of Dehydration

Usually, it’s not really that complicated to tell if you’re dehydrated or not. Some studies suggest that if you’re feeling thirsty, then you’re already mildly dehydrated. That is why it’s important to drink every once in a while during your practice to make sure you’re properly hydrated.

You could also check the color of your urine to tell if you’re dehydrated or not. A normal urine color ranges from clear to bright yellow. If your urine appears darker in color, then it is a sign that you should drink more water to replace lost fluids.

Feeling a bit lightheaded during your practice might also be an indication of dehydration. So, when you feel light-headed during a workout, rest for a while and drink some water.

Dry mouth and skin can also be a sign of dehydration. If you’re starting to notice that your lips are starting to get chapped and dry, and your skin starts to need more lotion than usual, then its time to drink more water.

How To Avoid Dehydration

To effectively avoid dehydration, you should follow a healthy practice of drinking enough water throughout the day. Furthermore, if you happen to take part in tiring physical activities such as exercise and sports, then you should consider drinking more water than usual.

If you’re not a fan of plain old water, then you could try some refreshing fruit juices and tasty milk shakes to replenish your body’s liquid stores.

Proper Hydration During Training

If you have been participating in gymnastics for kids for a while now, then you might be aware that you should consume far more fluid during your training session. That’s because your body’s temperature rises during an intense physical activity, causing your body to sweat in order to regulate your body temperature. The process of sweating causes your body to lose fluids, so it is only right to replace those fluids by drinking more water.

However, just drinking whenever you’re feeling thirsty is not enough to maintain proper hydration. During a training session, your body is continuously losing water, so you should drink every once in a while to replace the fluid that is being depleted. Most athletes won’t feel or notice that they’re already thirsty even though they’ve already lost great amounts of fluids, but that shouldn’t stop them from drinking during training. Studies suggest that gymnasts should drink every 15-20 minutes during practice, regardless of whether they’re thirsty or not.

Water Alone Is Not Enough

Most people believe that if you want to stay hydrated, then drinking more water is definitely the way to go. However, in most cases, too much of a good thing is a bad thing. During an intense exercise, your body doesn’t only lose water, but it also loses certain minerals such as electrolytes and potassium. These minerals are also essential for your athletic performance, so it is only important to replenish them. Drinking plain water probably won’t do the trick, so you should aim for drinks that contain these kinds of minerals.

Sports drink such as Gatorade and Powerade contains these minerals, which makes them an ideal workout drink for athletes. However, if you’re not into sports drinks, coconut water or a fruit juice made of blended watermelon would probably do the trick.

Sports Drink

Proper hydration is as important as proper training, as dehydration could severely affect not only your child’s athletic performance, but also their overall well-being. In order to make sure that your child is being trained and educated properly, you should go and enroll at Bianka Panova Sport and Art Academy and let your child get the most out of her training experience :)
