Laura Zeng Shows Dominance at the 2016 USA Gymnastics Championships

Sounding more like a seasoned professional than a young 16-year-old rhythmic gymnast, Laura Zeng depicted herself as “relieved to have done my job” after achieving victory at the 2016 USA Gymnastics Championships.

Zeng, despite her very young age, was the strong favorite to acquire both the all-around and the sole ticket to the Rio Olympics. Regardless, she still took this competition very seriously.

Being chosen as the representative of the U.S. for the Olympics “was never for sure,” Zeng said, despite the fact that she was the one who acquired the sole U.S. Olympic Ticket, of which she won by finishing eighth at the 2015 World Championships. That Olympic spot was “something I had to work for, because you know the national team was so diverse and amazing and I knew it was going to be tough competition.”

Her eighth place finish at the 2015 World Championships did not only make her as the highest finishing U.S. rhythmic gymnast in that competition, but also marked her as the highest finishing U.S rhythmic gymnast in the World Championships history.

Earlier in the season, the 16-year-old U.S. athlete made a history after becoming the first U.S. female rhythmic gymnast to win two World Cup medals in a competition in Belarus one month ago.

Proving herself as the appropriate choice for the Rio Olympics, Zeng showed dominance at the USA Championships all weekend. She acquired the gold medal in the all-around by nearly four points ahead of the silver medalist Camilla Feeley, who will act as the Olympic alternate. Zeng also acquired three out of the four available event titles – ribbon, ball and hoop. Feeley acquired the title in the Clubs event finals, while Zeng finished behind her.

Zeng mentioned that her focus was not on acquiring more medals and awards. “It was more about focusing on myself,” she said. “The medals and the awards are cherries on top. To be able to know that I did my routine to the best of my ability was just the most incredible feeling.”
