GymFest Singapore 2016 to be Held Closer to the Public

For the first time since 2007 when the organization of Singapore Gymnastics started hosting the event, the annual gymnastics exhibition gala “GymFest Singapore 2016” would take place on The Star Vista mall on the 29th of October 2016.

Created after the concept of World Gymnaestrada, GymFest Singapore is an annual Gymnastics Festival for all event. This affair aims to promote a healthy lifestyle and connect people in a fun and enjoyable way. It also provides a platform for people of all ages and abilities to showcase their talents through creative performances that inspire everyone to get moving.

This annual Singaporean gymnastics event was previously held at Toa Payoh Sports Hall and is ticketed. This year, shoppers will be treated to a colorful and graceful spectacle showcasing 13 teams, totaling to 200 gymnasts, including a Malaysian team.

One of these many performers is the national rhythmic gymnast Edlyn Ho Zen Yee. She was a part of the quintet who won Singapore’s maiden gold medal in rhythmic gymnastics at last year’s SEA Games. On this year’s GymFest, she would put up a choreographed performance as a member of a team of more than 20 gymnasts, some of whom are primary school pupils.

She was quoted to be saying, "It's going to be interesting because I'll be performing with a younger group, and our performance will be more of a dance with different music and items."

Performers are expecting to have more audience as the venue is a shopping mall, and this is actually the target of the organization. Patrick Ho, Singapore Gymnastics vice-president and chairman of the GymFest organizing committee, said the goal is to bring the sport closer to the public.

The event would give the passers-by a chance to try out apparatus like twirling a ribbon and tossing a ball or hoop for some hands-on experience. Organizers hope that more people might pick up the sport after giving them a feel of what gymnastics is like.
