Excitement For Olympics Gets More Obvious as Gymnastics Test Event Concludes

As the Aquece Rio Test Event comes to an end on Friday (22nd of April), the spectators and gymnasts were left craving for more. Around 6,000 fans and spectators per day were able to witness the world-class performance of some of the most prominent artistic, trampoline, and rhythmic gymnasts as they competed for over six days of competition at the Rio Olympic Arena, where the final qualification spots for the Olympic Games were distributed.

The passionate atmosphere inside the Rio Olympic Arena, the venue which will also be used for the actual Olympic Games in August, was emphasized by the athletes and the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) as the test event came to an end. “The fans made me feel strong, and that’s a great thing,” said Belarusian rhythmic gymnast Melitina Staniouta, who became a silver medalist at the 2014 European Championships. “At the end of the day we are not performing for the judges, we are doing it for the fans.”

Austrian rhythmic gymnast Nicol Ruprecht, who acquired the third place and won an Olympic berth, also praised the fans and spectators. “The crowd made me feel really good,” she said. “They really supported us and it was a great experience for me to qualify for the Olympics here. I can’t even begin to describe it.”

As many of the audience were composed of groups of local gymnastics clubs, including several young athletes, the atmosphere in the Rio Olympic Arena was not only of enthusiasm, but admiration of the finer aspects of the competition. “Seeing these incredible gymnasts is something to celebrate,” said Julia Rodrigues, a member of the AABB Tijuca club. “It’s fantastic to be at such a big event and to get a taste of what the Olympics will be like.”

The ambience in the Olympic venue also pleased André Gueisbuhler, the General Secretary of the International Gymnastics Federation. “We are very happy that we had such large and enthusiastic crowds,” he said. “It shows how popular gymnastics is in Brazil and the competitors appreciated the support, which can inspire extraordinary performances.”

The competition which was held last weekend also acts as the first opportunity to have a brief look at the green competition area that will be used for the Games in August. “Normally (at international competitions) we compete on blue, but it makes sense to have green in Brazil, because of the country’s flag, and I like it a lot,” Staniouta stated.

Chinese trampoline gymnast Li Dan, the reigning trampoline world champion also approved the new color of the competition area. “ It is something different, it’s beautiful and doesn’t interfere with the competition,” she said.

Overall, the Aquece Rio Test Event received a positive evaluation from the gymnastics’ governing body (FIG). “It went well”, said Gueisbuhler. “The feedback from the athletes was good, they are all very excited about the Games and happy to have competed in the Olympic venue. The volunteers were fantastic and the management of the competition area showed how organizers are determined to do their best in difficult moments.”

The final Olympic spots for the three gymnastics disciplines were already distributed. In the rhythmic gymnastics discipline, Germany, Uzbekistan and Greece took the remaining three spots in the team competition, while eight individual sports were also handed out.

In the trampoline discipline, New Zealand, Portugal, USA, Great Britain, Australia, Canada, Kazakhstan and Brazil won the final qualification spots in the men’s competition, while Russia, Ukraine, Japan, Uzbekistan, Germany, Portugal, USA and France took the spots in the women’s competition.

The final qualification spots for Artistic gymnastics were also handed out, with the absence of Romania in the list of qualified women’s team came out as a big shock.
